The Community Shelf
Accessibility
We want every neighbour to be able to use the Community Shelf, whatever device you use and however you use it.
What we aim for
We build this site to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. That means, for example:
- Every page works with a keyboard alone, with a focus ring you can see.
- Form fields have real labels, and errors are written out, not shown by colour.
- Buttons and links are at least 44 pixels tall, so they’re easy to tap.
- Text has strong contrast against its background.
- Pages fit a narrow phone screen without scrolling sideways, and zoom to 200%.
- Screen readers hear status messages, like a hold being saved.
How we check
- Automated checks (axe) run on every page in our tests, before each change goes live.
- We try the main tasks with a keyboard and a screen reader.
- We check each screen at phone widths down to 320 pixels.
What we know isn’t perfect yet
- Photos that neighbours add of their produce and racks may not have detailed descriptions. The item name and details are always written out next to them.
- Sign-in goes through Google or Facebook, whose pages we don’t control.
- Notifications come by email only. Texts are coming later.
