A give-back project from Bakes & Brews

Grown next door.
Shared on our shelf.

The Community Shelf is a set of racks in each of our cafés where neighbours leave what they grow, and other neighbours take it home. No stall, no middleman. Just good food finding the next kitchen.

Antioch shelf, right now

The racks are empty right now. Neighbours fill them through the week.

One of our shelves. Find the one nearest you.

Our vision

A neighbourhood where nothing good goes to waste.

  • Neighbours first

A shelf is a small thing. It gives people who live a few streets apart a reason to meet, trade tips and swap seeds.

  • Nothing goes to waste

A good tree gives more lemons than one family can use. The extra should end up in someone’s kitchen, not the compost.

  • Simple and open

No stall, no fee to sign up, no staff in the way. Post it, place it, and the shelf does the rest.

A note from us

Dear neighbour,

Every bite has a story. Some of the best ones start in a backyard: a curry-leaf plant brought from home years ago, a lemon tree that won’t stop giving, tomatoes someone’s grandmother taught them to grow.

We opened Bakes & Brews to feed this community. The shelf is our way of giving some of that back. It belongs to everyone who fills it and everyone who takes from it.

So bring what you have too much of. Take what you need. Say hello to the person who grew it.

Shelf manners

The shelf runs on trust. A few simple habits keep it working for everyone.

  1. Label every packet

Your name, what’s inside and the pick date, on the packet itself.

  2. Fresh and clean only

Rinse it, bag it, seal it. If you wouldn’t buy it, don’t post it.

  3. Mark the right rack

Buyers look where you said it is. Moved it? Update it.

  4. Pull what’s past its best

Check your items and take home anything past its best-before date.

  5. Take what you paid for

It’s an honour shelf. Keep it that way.

Help & questions

Who can share on the shelf?

Approved sellers from the community who grow produce at home: veggies, greens, herbs and fruit. Sign in, apply to be a seller, and once we approve you, you can post.

Can I sell home-made food?

Not yet. We’re starting with homegrown produce. Home-made foods will come later, once sellers can add their cottage food registration.

I don’t have bags or labels. Can I still share?

Yes. Bring it loose and ask at the counter. We keep bags and labels in every café and will help you pack it and place it on a rack.

Can I share at more than one branch?

Yes. Once you’re approved, add the shelves you can reach under My items. Each item lives on one shelf, so pick which one when you post. Posting at two shelves means two posts.

Is there a fee?

[FEE POLICY]

How do I get paid?

Buyers pay us at the counter. We tally what sold and pay you out [PAYOUT SCHEDULE] by Zelle or cash.

What if I forget which rack I used?

Open My items and edit the item. Put the right rack in so buyers can find it.

Something I bought wasn’t right. What now?

Tell us at the counter or call (925) 301-8384. We’ll sort it out with the grower.

Why do I need to sign in to post?

So every packet has a real neighbour behind it. Google or Facebook both work. We never post for you.
